FED: Christians mark Good Friday

It's Good Friday, and non-Orthodox Christians around the world are marking today the
death of JESUS CHRIST some 2,000 years ago.

Good Friday, the holiest day on the Christian calendar, is symbolically the day JESUS
was crucified and died on the cross.

The day is being marked with church services and prayers.

In Sydney, Catholic Archbishop Cardinal EDWARD CLANCY, will lead the service at St
Mary's Cathedral this morning.

In Adelaide, a Good Friday service will be held at the St Francis Xavier Catholic Cathedral,
and in Melbourne at St Paul's Cathedral in the city.

Good Friday and Easter messages from church leaders touched mainly on issues affecting
indigenous Australians.

The Anglican Primate of Australia, Archbishop PETER CARNLEY, has attacked the government's
denial that there had been a generation of stolen Aboriginal children, calling the government's
stance pedantic, insensitive and regrettable.

Sydney Archbishop HARRY GOODHEW says the Northern Territory and Western Australian
laws on mandatory sentencing are an abuse of a justice system that discriminates against
Aborigines.

And the Anglican Bishop of Canberra-Goulburn GEORGE BROWNING wants Canberra to be the
home of a national memorial recognising the pain and suffering of Aborigines.

Orthodox Christians will celebrate Easter on 30 April.
